낸시 프레이저의 신작 『좌파의 길』은 마르크스의 이론적 범주들을 무기로 삼아우리가 현재 겪고 있는 자본주의의 위기를 체계적인 동시에 포괄적으로 진단하고, 식인화된 형태의 현대 자본주의를 극복하기 위해 사회주의를 대안으로 제시한다. 이를 위해 프레이저는 우선 자본주의를 하나의 제도화된 사회 질서로 규정한다. 그에 따르면, 자본주의의 위기의 근원은 경제적 영역과 비-경제적 영역들 간의 분리와얽힘에서 비롯되는 영역 간 모순이다. 그리고 이러한 영역 간 모순은 자본 축적과 결부된 핵심적인 경제적 관행에 도전하는 경계투쟁을 불러온다. 그러므로 사회주의로의 이행은 자본주의 사회가 만들어낸 제도적 경계선들을 다시 상상하는 것에서 시작된다. 그러나 자본주의 경제가 비-경제적 조건들에 의존하고 있다는 프레이저의분석적 전제에 대해선 재검토가 필요하다. 분명히 그것이 사회에 착근되어 있음에도 불구하고 끊임없이 사회로부터 탈착근된 것으로 나타나는 경제적인 것의 역설은사회적 총체성을 과잉결정하는 구조화 원리로서의 경제의 착근된 탈착근성에 관한변증법적 사유를 우리에게 촉구하기 때문이다
Abstract
Nancy Fraser’s new book, Cannibal Capitalism , uses Marx’s theoretical categories as a weapon to systematically and comprehensively diagnose the crisis of capitalism that we are currently experiencing, and to propose socialism as an alternative to overcome what she describes as capitalism’s cannibalized forms. Fraser begins by defining capitalism as an institutionalized societal order. According to her, the root of its crisis lies in the contradictions that arise from the separation and entwinement of the economic and non-economic realms. These inter-realm contradictions give rise to boundary struggles that challenge the core economic practices associated with capital accumulation. The transition to socialism, then, begins with a reimagining of the institutional boundaries that capitalist society has created. However, Fraser’s analytical premise that the capitalist economy is dependent on non-economic conditions needs to be re-examined. This is because of the paradox of the economic, which constantly appears to be disembedded from society even though it is clearly embedded in it. This challenges us to think dialectically about the economy’s quality of ‘embedded disembeddedness’: acting a structuring principle that overdetermines the social totality.
