Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to interpret the thought of Nammyeong Jo Sik through the concepts of chiyong (致用, realization through application) and haengdo (行道, practicing the Way). While academic discussions have thus far characterized Nammyeong’s philosophy in terms of “practical Confucianism” or as a system of “reverence and righteousness” (gyeong-ui), this study focuses on chiyong and haengdo, concepts articulated in his 1568 memorial to the throne (Mujin Bongsa), to uncover another important feature of his thought. These concepts, along with hahak (下學, foundational learning), which Nammyeong frequently emphasized, clearly reveal the practical orientation of his philosophical outlook. This paper argues that such practical dimensions of Nammyeong’s philosophy may serve as a conceptual foundation for explaining the connection between his thought and the modern Korean spirit of entrepreneurship—an area that has recently drawn scholarly attention. Furthermore, Nammyeong’s ideas of hahak, chiyong, and haengdo influenced not only his direct disciples, such as Naeam Jeong Inhong, but also scholars associated with the Nammyeong school, including Seongho Yi Ik, Sunam Ahn Jung-bok, Haryeo Hwang Deok-gil, and Seongjae Heo Jeon. Seongjae Heo Jeon, in particular, served as magistrate of Gimhae and had a significant influence on scholars in the Gyeongsang U-do region. Notably, Yi Hong-seok—grandfather of Samsung founder Lee Byung-chul—was among his disciples. In addition, Jo Hong-je (founder of Hyosung), who identified himself as a descendant of Nammyeong’s scholarly lineage, and Koo In-hwoi (founder of LG), whose mother came from a family tied to Nammyeong’s tradition, exemplify how the practical orientation embedded in hahak, chiyong, and haengdo may have indirectly influenced Korea’s leading entrepreneurs. These cases may help address the question of whether descendants of Confucian scholar-families actively entered the realm of commerce, and to what extent prominent entrepreneurs emerged from lineages closely connected to the Nammyeong school.
