In wireless multimedia networks, one of the important Quality-of-Service (QoS) issues is how to control handoff drops. In this paper, we propose cell-oriented admission control schemes that adaptively control the admission threshold in each cell, in order to keep the handoff dropping probability below a pre-defined level (thus providing a probabilistic QoS guarantee). The admission threshold is dynamically adjusted based on the handoff dropping events. We first develop a simple admission control scheme. We then discuss the inter-cell unfairness problem and develop two enhanced schemes to overcome this. The performances of these schemes are compared with another competitive scheme. The results indicate that our scheme performs very well with significantly reduced complexity and signaling load.
