Abstract

The need for higher data rates and better quality in wireless communications calls for advance coding methods. For a given bandwidth, the capacity can be increased by using multiple transmit and/or receive antennas. Also, multiple antennas can be utilized to achieve diversity or perform beamforming. In this paper, we study different methods of space-time block coding over multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) channels. We consider different assumptions for channel state information and study the design of full diversity and low complexity codes at each case. For the case that the decoder knows the channel and the encoder does not know the channel, we review the design of low complexity, full diversity, rate one space-time block codes (STBCs). For the case that neither encoder nor decoder knows the channel, differential space-time modulations are introduced. We study two block diagrams for differential space-time encoding and demonstrate that one is a special case of the other. For the case that both encoder and decoder know the channel, a realistic assumption is a partial channel state information knowledge at the transmitter. A combination of beamforming and space-time block coding is utilized in this case. The result is a four-directional beamformer with nice behaviors at high and low SNRs and under different channel feedback qualities. In all cases, utilizing a quasiorthogonal STBC instead of an orthogonal STBC improves the performance.
