Abstract
The hitherto separated telecommunication and conventional industries, which have never had a competitive relationship, are converging and creating new business domains at the interface. This emerging phenomenon, which is defined as heterogeneous inter-industry convergence (HIC), may be an attractive opportunity or a potential threat to not only companies from conventional industries but also telecommunication companies (telcos). However, in spite of the significance of responding to the HIC challenge, there are few studies on how to evaluate its attractiveness and how to develop proper responsive business strategies. In this paper, we provide a new framework, which is called ''Convergence Portfolio Matrix (CPM)'', for telcos to evaluate market attractiveness of various HIC markets and create new types of HIC strategies. The Korean case indicates that the CPM may be a useful tool for telcos to work out adequate segmented strategies under various HIC contexts
