Abstract

This paper proposes a L2 triggering scheme that is required for supporting fast handoff with assist of fast mobile IP (FMIP). The L2 triggering scheme proposed in this paper is inspired by the fact that the received signal strength (RSS) values in a short time interval are tightly correlated. By the correlated relation, RSS can be predicted to timely initiate a L2 trigger for fast handoff. First, it is shown that the autoregressive process of order 1 (AR(1)), one of the stationary time series processes, can be adopted for the RSS prediction. Then, the performance of the proposed L2 triggering scheme is analyzed in terms of the rate of late L2 triggers decided by the target handoff delay bound. In addition, a method for compensating prediction errors is introduced. By ns-2 simulations, it is also shown that the rate of late L2 triggers can be reduced significantly by compensating the prediction errors with maintaining a reasonable rate of false alarms.
