Abstract
In many product categories, dominant design influences much on strategy and result of enterprises. Dominant design is, thus, major area for designers who have to make strategy for design development. Nevertheless, the concept of “dominant design” has been dealt as meaning of “industrial standard of technology”. The emergence of “dominant design” can be considered not only as standard of technology but also as innovation of design. This study is to deal with the concept of dominant design for research focusing on design factors as applying to design area not focused only in technology that had dealt only in technology innovation area. For this, cellular phones are selected as the object, for change of design is the fastest as the cycle is shorter compared to other electric products categories. Procedure of technology innovation and changing procedure of design factors are chased. We suggested to measure the control power of the design factors. As applying to products through this, dominant degree of design factors is understood with convergence and divergence of design factors. This study is to give suggestion for intended design direction for future customer of cellular phone and suggest guideline to develop new successful product which is preparation for appearance of dominant design.
