Abstract
We theoretically analyze the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance by modeling the occurrence of BER in order to increase performance by optimizing the threshold level of a receiver in asynchronous 10 Gbps/622 Mbps, 1.25 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 5Gbps optical subscriber network with inverse RZ (Return to Zero) coded downstream and NRZ (Non Return to Zero)downstream re-modulation and it is performed by simulation with MATLAB according to the types of downstream data for four models of which the downstream to upstream data ratios are 1:2, 1:4, 1:8 and 1:16. The results have shown that the normalized threshold level in an optical receiver could be saturated at 1/3 as the average received optical power increase and the BER using the fixed threshold level at 1/3 is not deteriorated compared with using the optimal threshold level. As the average received optical power increases than -28 dBm, the average received optical powers for obtaining the same BER can be reduced by 2 dB~3 dB than using the conventional receiver with threshold level of 0.5. The asynchronous 10 Gbps/622Mbps, 1.25 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps optical subscriber network with inverse RZ (Return to Zero) coded downstream and NRZ (Non Return to Zero) downstream re-modulation can be a useful technology for asynchronous optical access networks because the improved minimum receiving power could increases the number of subscribers.
