Abstract
Subjective quality assessment of multimedia contents is an important step to obtain the most accurate judgment of the performance of various multimedia processing techniques in terms of perceived quality of the produced contents. Among standardized subjective test methodologies, the single stimulus methodology has been the most popular. This paper claims that the paired comparison methodology has advantages over the single stimulus methodology in terms of simplicity of tests, discriminability between stimuli and, consequently, reliability of the results, particularly for quality assessment problems involving multiple quality variables being compared at the same time. The claim is supported by experimental results on subjective quality assessment of video scalability.
