초록
As digital audio-visual data compression and transmission techniques are matured, huge amount of digital multimedia material is produced and delivered via broadcasting, digital storage media and World Wide Web (WWW). Not only a new technological breakthrough is required for searching and retrieval of multimedia based on content matching or similarity, but also interoperability between various content description and indexing scheme is urgently needed. Thus it became very important to provide a standardized way of multimedia data content description, so that efficient and effective access and reuse of valuable multimedia information can be possible. In this paper, a new international standardization effort on Multimedia Content Description Interface, called MPEG-7 is presented in terms of its objective, application and requirements. Then we overview video indexing technologies. Content based image/video indexing has drawn much attention in multimedia information retrieval, which mainly focuses on indexing based on low level features such as color, texture and shape etc. We, however, consider methods of constructing hierarchical representation scheme of video content which has drawn less attention but is important in semantic understanding of underlying content of video.
