This paper describes an efficient design method for an aperture-coupled microstrip patch antenna based on an improved transmission line model. The governing equations are derived and applied to the design of an antenna with a center operating frequency of 11 GHz. The return loss of the fabricated antenna was measured and compared with the present theory. The error in the proposed design method is less than 1.5 %.
