Abstract

Recently automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are widely used for the convenient interaction between human and machine in many areas. Though great improvement has been achieved in speech reconition technology, the performance of ASR system often degrades drastically when there is a mismatch between the training and test coniditions due to noise or speaker variability. In this paper we describe the speaker adaptation approaches for hidden Markov model (HMM) based speech recognition to overcome such mismatch and improve the performance incrementally using a small amount of adaptation data. After addressing the issues regarding four different adaptation families such as maximum a posteriori (MAP) family, transformation-based family, speaker space-based family, online adaptation family and compare the strength and weakness of each adaptation family.
