국내 초고속 인터넷 및 이동통신 시장은 성숙기에 접어들어 양적인 팽창을 통한 통신산업 발전을 이루는 데에는 한계에 도달하고 있다. 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위한 새로운 수익원의 하나로 무선인터넷이 예상되고 있으며, 경쟁력 있 는 무선인터넷 제공을 위한 솔루션의 하나로 휴대인터넷이 최근 주목 받고 있다. 국내에서는 2.3GHz 대역의 주파수를 이용하여 휴대인터넷 사업을 시작할 계획을 갖고 있다. 이에 따라, 통신사업자들은 사업권 획득을 위해 외국의 휴대 인터넷 대안기술들의 테스트 및 시범서비스를 준비하거나 시행 중에 있으며, 또한 연구기관 및 산업체에서는 국내 기술 개발에 박차를 가하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 기존의 상용 무선랜 및 이동통신 기반 무선인터넷과 휴대인터넷의 차이점을 알아보고, 외국의 대표적인 휴대인터넷 대안기술들의 특징들과 함께, 국내에서 개발 중인 휴대인터넷 기술인HPi(High-speedPortable Internet)에 대하여 기술한다.
Abstract
As the market for high-speed internet and mobile communication services attains maturity in Korea, the communications industry has shown a limit of growth based on the quantitative expansion in the number of subscribers. Wireless internet is expected to be a new source for exceeding this limit of growth and expand profits. Recently, much attention has been paid to portable internet as a solution with competitive power to provide wireless internet service. There is a plan in Korea to provide portable internet service in a 2.3GHz frequency band. In order to get a business license, service providers have prepared or carried out a test and trial of foreign technologies for use in portable internet service, and communication research institutes and the industry as a whole have spurred the development of domestic technology. In this paper, we look at the differences between commercial wireless LAN, wireless internet used in mobile communication, and portable internet. We observe the key characteristics of foreign technologies, and further describe HPi (Highspeed Portable Internet) which is a domestic technology.
