대학생의 청소년기 학급친구 자살경험에 대한 질적 연구

초록

본 연구는 중고등학교 재학 중에 친구의 자살을 경험한 대학생들을 대상으로 이들의 주관적 경험과 의미를 구조화하고자 하였다. 서울시 주요 대학 인터넷 게시판의 공고를 보고 중고생 때 (학급)친구의 자살을 경험한 후 1년이 경과한 대학생들이 자발적 참여의사로 지원하였으며, 그 중 전화면접을 통해 중고등학생 시기에 친한 친구나 혹은 같은 학급 친구의 자살경험을 한 대학생 11명을 인터뷰 하였다. 반구조화된 질문을 바탕으로 일대일 면담방식으로 진행하고 추출된 자료에 대해 현상학적 분석을 실시하였으며, 학급친구가 자살한 참여자들이 자살(소식) 접촉 당시와 이후에 관한 경험의 의미를 이해하고자 하였다. 첫째, 자살(소식) 접촉 당시의 경험은 크게 ‘자살(소식)의 접촉’, ‘자살(소식) 접촉시 참여자 반응’, ‘자살소식 접촉시 관찰된 주변 반응’ ‘관찰된 주변 반응에 대한 참여자 반응’영역으로 구분하였다. 둘째, 자살 발생 이후의 경험은 다시 ‘참여자의 반응’과 ‘관찰된 주변 반응’, ‘관찰된 주변 반응에 대한 참여자 반응’ 영역으로 구분하였다. 이들은 학교 당국의 관련 절차를 무관심하게 지각하고 경험하거나 혹은 친구의 자살을 경험한 청소년들과 주변사람들은 우울, 죄책감, 멍해짐, 신체화, 부인하거나 회피하는 등의 정서적 반응들을 나타내었으며, 이러한 반응은 길게는 2년까지도 지속되었다. 이들은 학교 당국의 관련 절차를 무관심하게 지각하고 분노 혹은 좌절감을 경험하였으며, 혼란스러운 교사의 반응에 의해 혼란스러움을 경험하기도 하였다. 학생 자살이 발생한 후 학교의 적절한 사후개입의 필요성이 논의되었다. 마지막으로 결과에 대한 연구의 의의와 제한점을 제시하였다.

Abstract

We examined the impacts of friends’ suicide in their middle or high school years in this study. We interviewed the college students with the semi-structured question and analyzed the interview data using the Phenomenological Analysis Method. We had focused on their responses and aftermath effect of the friends’ suicide when the interviewees came to know the suicide. We found that the interviewees showed the emotional responses such as depression, guilty, anger, somatization, denial and avoidance and the responses aforementioned had lasted for up to 2 years. It was shown that the interviewees had gone through anger and frustration and felt disturbed when the schools and the teachers did not take appropriate procedures. We suggested that the schools and the teachers need to intervene the process.
