Abstract
The purpose of this study was to test effects of the program for understanding people with disabilities on the attitude of children toward them. The control group pretest-posttest design was employed for the experiment. The experimental group was 70 children belonged to Grade four and six. There were two mental retarded children in the fourth-year class. The control group was constituted by 146 children who belonged to Grade four and six in the same school and in another elementary school which wasn't outfitted with special class. The experiment was conducted in eight sessions for four weeks, 40 minutes each. F-test and Scheffe test were implemented to examine mean differences in pretest and posttest scores between the experimental and control groups. The findings of this study were as follows: First, the pretest results in attitude toward the disabled showed no significant differences between the two groups, but significant differences in the posttest scores. Accordingly, the program had a positive influence on the experimental group's attitude toward the disabled. Second, the experimental group integrated with handicapped classmates had a more favorable attitude than those without handicapped classmates. Third, the presence of special class made no differences to the control group's attitude. Fourth, the experimental group who had experiences of integrated education had a more favorable attitude than those who had not. The above-mentioned findings proved that in schools where handicapped and normal children should coexist, the program providing firsthand information on disabled children and various types of interventions had a significant effect on improving normal children's view of the disabled.
