Abstract
5G cellular system is expected to support a massive connectivity with a density of 106 devices/km2. It implies that sufficient radio access capacity must be provisioned to handle the ever increasing Machine Type Communication (MTC) traffic while dealing with the intermittent and sporadic transmission of rather short packets by a massive number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. In this paper, we first investigate the current MTC technology trends that deal with these requirements and then, discuss two different approaches, compressed sensing-based and large-scale MIMO-based random access techniques, as a means of boosting the random access capacity. We have demonstrated that more MTC traffic capacity can be achieved by the proposed compressed sensing-based (grant-free) random access technique than grant-based random access as in LTE system, or by receiving the packets with a large number of antennas, that are transmitted simultaneously from the multiple devices over the same physical resources.
