Abstract
This study explored the mediating effects of maladaptive cognitive emotional control strategies and mental health on the relationship between COVID-19 stress and suicidal ideation among Korean adolescents and aimed to suggest solutions to psychological and emotional problems that adolescents face during the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, a survey was conducted with 975 adolescents attending middle and high schools in Korea, using the COVID-19 Stress Scale, Suicide Ideation Scale, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and Youth Risk Status Survey Scale. Descriptive statistical analyses and Pearson correlation analysis were conducted with the collected data, and structural equation modeling was used to test hypotheses and to determine model fit. Results are as follows. First, study variables were significantly positively correlated with one another. Second, structural equation modeling supported both full mediation and partial mediation effects; both showed good model fit, and a simpler partial mediation model was finally adopted. Third, indirect partial mediation effects were significant. Findings suggest that COVID-19-related stress among adolescents affect mental health and can lead to suicidal attempts as the level increases due to maladaptive cognitive emotional control strategies. This could mean that adaptive cognitive emotion control strategies can help adolescents to better deal with mental health problems and suicide due to stress caused by COVID-19.
