Abstract
This study examined the effects of parenting attitudes on adolescents’ somatic symptoms, with particular attention to the mediating role of self-esteem and the mediating effects of individual dimensions of parenting attitude. Data were drawn from the 2021 National Youth Mental Health Survey conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute in Korea. Mediation analyses were conducted using Hayes’ PROCESS Macro Model 4, controlling for gender, family structure, residential area, and economic status. Results indicated that the association between parenting attitudes and adolescents’ somatic symptoms was mediated by adolescents’ self-esteem. Specifically, the subdimensions of autonomy support, provision of structure, rejection, and coercion showed significant indirect effects on somatic symptoms through self-esteem but showed no direct effects, indicating full mediation. In contrast, warmth and inconsistency demonstrated both significant indirect effects via self-esteem and direct effects on somatic symptoms, suggesting partial mediation. These findings underscore the importance of family-based emotional interventions for the early detection and prevention of adolescent’s somatic symptoms. The results also provide empirical evidence that parents’ emotional responsiveness and supportive attitudes play a critical role in promoting adolescents’ psychological stability and reducing physical symptom expression.
