Abstract

This paper deals with two historians, Yi In-sŏp and Kye Pong-u, who have been examined from modern historical approaches such as nationalism, cultural history, and history of Korean communist movements. Yi In-sŏp is a history writer with a background in the Righteous Army and the Bolshevik partisan. A new evaluation is made by analyzing the origins and transformation of the two people’s historical consciousness. And the entire history of the two historians’ cooperation or joint historical record project, which had not previously been reviewed, was highlighted. Thus the paper argues that Kye Pong-u withdrew a possible conclusion from the life experience of Yi In-sŏp, the Righteous Army survivor and the Red Army partisan, discovered an important historical fact of Korean history of national liberation. Regarding Kye Pong-u’s early historical consciousness, Dream Within a Dream shows the possibility of new interpretation. The material is Kye Pong-u’s memoir, which has been widely used in the field of research on the history of the communist movement from 1919 to 1922. However, It also includes parts of historical writings done before 1916, which allow us to understand and extract modern historical analysis according to Kye Pong-u’s early historical consciousness and further to re-recognize the origins of his works. Therefore, as a result of reconsidering the understanding of the historical materials, it was revealed that the historical consciousness that Kye Pong-u and Yi In-sŏp had was based on Chinese intellectual traditions and the classics of East Asia. In this regard, this paper sheds light on Kye Pong-u’s historical consciousness and verifies the previous assessment that he ‘combined nationalism and class consciousness.’ Therefore, this paper evaluates that Kye Bong-u’s national revolutionary historical consciousness encompasses from East Asian historical classics to the socialist theories and the perspective of class struggle. The early historical consciousness was designed to promote Chosŏn independence based on universal historical principles derived from the classics. Yi In-sŏp or Kang Bo-guk, who participated in the Righteous army activities, showed anti-Japanese regional historical consciousness during the same period. Kye Pong-u and Yi In-sŏp became members of the Korean Communist Party and the Russian Communist Party, respectively, in the 1920s. From this period, a common sense of history was discovered between these two people. It is a socialist historical consciousness that aims to discover the struggles and fighting power of the people. Based on this common historical consciousness, the two were able to work on the joint historical record project starting in 1939. In their project, Kye Pong-u presented the principles of universal historical development stages from the perspective of the struggle between the ruling group and the ruled group, or the new group and the old group. Through Yi In-sŏp’s experiences as a volunteer soldier and a former partisan, the volunteer army movement in the Northeastern regions of Korea was evaluated as a revolutionary nationalist movement and a beginning form of warriors in the communist movement. Unlike Kye Pong-u, who attempted to find universal historical principles in the stages of historical development, Yi In-sŏp pursued ‘history as a narrative.’ Yi In-sŏp’s arguments on their historical records showed an aspect of Korean studies in the USSR and the historical consciousness of Koryŏ people (ethnic Koreans living in the USSR)’s modern and contemporary history, which seeks to remember the revolutionary history of the Koryŏ ethnic minority who actively participated along with the Russians and Chinese in the process of building the Soviet Russian state.
