Abstract
This study analyzed economic and social gaps and spatial inequality between Seoul and Gyeonggi-do (Gwangmyeong-si, Guri-si, Hanam-si, and Gimpo-si), and examined changes in regional gaps in the scenario of integrating Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Five-year lag data for 2017 and 2022 were constructed to see changes in regional gaps, and spatial inequality in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province was identified through four competency indicators: population, economic power, living infrastructure, and education. Specifically, the imbalance between regions was quantitatively measured using the coefficient of variation and tile coefficient, and from this, the regional gap, inequality, and regional gap mitigation between Seoul and Gyeonggi-do were revealed in various ways. If the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the right to transfer to Gyeonggi-do integrate to form Mega City (Region) Seoul, there is a possibility that regional gaps will ease in various sectors, but the gap in the education sector will remain. Therefore, it suggests the necessity of policies to bridge the educational gap in the Gyeonggi-do transfer area. By presenting the results of a systematic analysis of regional gaps and spatial inequality between Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, this study aims to identify the impact of metropolitan area integration on unbalanced development between regions and provide important basic data for the establishment of policies for balanced development in the metropolitan area in the future.
