Abstract

(Background and Purpose)Because of the increase in the number of single elderly households resulting from family structures that are increasingly becoming nuclear, an increase in the number of elderly who desire independence, and a continuous increase in the overall elderly population, the necessity of elder housing is becoming more pronounced. In contrast, the awareness of and an emphasis on lighting in residential spaces for the elderly are still insufficient. (Method)Therefore, this study intends to understand the behavioral changes in old age that result from the decline in eye function and the psychological changes caused by aging. This study will also identify improvements in light design by reviewing domestic and foreign literature on the characteristics of old age and analyzing prior studies. (Result)It will then suggest residential environments and lighting designed for the elderly. From the perspective of universal design, there should be high uniformity of lighting in residential spaces for the elderly, based on establishing the most suitable horizontal and vertical illuminance for a user’s eye level. In addition, guidance illumination in keeping with users’ movements should be installed for safety, considering the weakening of physical functions. Appropriate lighting apparatus should also be selected so as to reduce glare.
