Abstract

(Background and Purpose) With the rapid development of urbanization, architecture plays an important role in urban structure. Architecture is the main body of the city, and it acts as a medium of communication between humankind and nature and the environment. The emergence of landscape architecture alleviates the oppression, tedium, and dullness caused by materials such as steel and concrete in modern urban architecture, and promotes sustainable development of urban ecology. As an important factor in the composition of the urban environment, landscape architecture must functionally meet the requirements of use and be closely integrated with the geographical environment in which it is located. This paper analyzes the ecological characteristic elements of landscape architecture by combining well-known landscape architecture application examples at home and abroad, and provides new ideas for future landscape architectural design, urban architectural design, urban landscape planning, and the sustainable development of urban ecological environment. (Method) The article adopts the case study method, first, it elaborates on the definition and classification of landscape architecture, analyzes the tendencies in landscape architectural design, and outlines the prior research characteristic elements of landscape architecture. Second, based on the theory of landscape architecture, by examining and sorting out ecological design theory, we extract the ecological characteristic elements according to prior research—specifically, the six characteristic elements of wholeness, diversity, evolution, circularity, stability, and adaptability. Third, we analyzed and studied the ecological characteristics elements in six domestic and foreign landscape architecture cases as examples. (Results) Through the comprehensive analysis of the cases, six ecological characteristics of landscape architecture are derived: (1 wholeness is visually prominent, and the building and the environment can be well integrated; (2) circularity is well represented in the design method, reflecting the environmental protection concept of landscape architectural design; (3) stability ensures that the building and the environment are constantly self-regulating, so that a lasting dynamic balance is reached between the building and the surrounding environment; (4) landscape architecture in the form and structure of the gradual refinement, functional specialization, efficiency is also gradually increased, reflecting the ecological evolution; (5) adaptability means that landscape architecture can be attached to the topographic environment, to play a role in protecting the environment; and (6) diversity, though this characteristic is not very obvious in the six cases; in this regard there is still a need to strengthen the research. (Conclusions) Ecological characteristics have penetrated into every aspect of landscape architectural design, and ecology is always a factor that designers must consider in the whole design process. The ecological design of landscape architecture has an important role in regional economic development, the improvement of people's quality of life, and the protection of the ecological environment.
