Abstract
(Background and Purpose) The flexible nature of the fiber material perfectly harmonizes with the cold landscape of buildings and enhances the friendliness and comfort of interior public spaces. Fiber installation art not only enhances the aesthetics of interior public spaces but also provides a platform for artists and designers to explore innovative and expressive possibilities. In addition, it enhances the quality and experience of interior public spaces, attracts visitors, and evokes contemplation and emotions. Furthermore, fiber installation art contributes to the diversity of architectural forms and enhances the visual image of public buildings. This study aimed to conduct a case analysis of the comprehensive expression forms and techniques of fiber installation art in interior public spaces and to explore new ideas for integrating them into such spaces. (Method) First, the concepts and classifications of fiber materials, installation art, and interior public spaces were collated through a literature review. Second, the concept and formation process of fiber installation art were analyzed through a literature review. Additionally, starting with the application of fiber installation art in interior public spaces, we analyzed the spatial representation types and spatial relationships of the artworks. Third, based on the design cases, we conducted a comparative analysis of natural fiber works (seven cases), artificial fiber works (six cases), and found object works (four cases). Furthermore, to derive comprehensive expressive forms and methods of fiber decoration in interior public spaces, the cases were comprehensively analyzed. (Results) The results of the case analysis showed that, in terms of materials, natural fibers > artificial fibers > found objects. In terms of spatial representation types, hanging works were the most common, while other types were generally not present independently but were combined with hanging works. From a sensory perspective, visual perception was the most direct characteristic of all the works, followed by tactile and auditory perceptions. The olfactory perceptions were relatively less evident. The function of artwork was primarily to embellish and express the artist's emotions, while some also served practical purposes. (Conclusion) The installation of art in interior public spaces adds vitality to the environment through the creative combination of unique fiber expressions and material characteristics. Visual, tactile, auditory, and olfactory interactions with an audience evoke thoughts and emotions related to the space. Fiber installation art showcases its creative potential not only in architectural and interior design, but also in the innovative reconfiguration and fusion of different styles, including hanging, attached, vertical, and kinetic installations, shaping a novel architectural language.
