Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Traditional architecture plays a crucial role in cultural tourism, but it faces the challenge of disappearing. In today's world, traditional architecture holds immense spatial potential due to its artistic, cultural, and educational values. The application of spatial patterns in urban planning and architectural design presents new opportunities for utilizing traditional architecture in contemporary contexts. To investigate the spatial characteristics and cultural tourism potential of Beijing's Ningshou Palace complex within the Forbidden City, this study aims to explore its spatial syntax. (Method) In this research, Ningshou Palace is theoretically investigated to understand its spatial syntax. By analyzing the spatial morphology, a spatial map and correlation map of convex surfaces are created. Using AutoCAD and Depthmap X, the convex space map is imported and connected based on the phase relationship map. Selectivity, connectivity, consistency, and global depth values are measured for each space and used as evaluation criteria. The study evaluates the areas with the highest spatial potential in Ningshou Palace and predicts the future spatial planning for these areas. The research scope includes analyzing the spatial morphology and spatial syntactic analysis of Ningshou Palace, with the aim of optimizing its spatial utilization. (Results) The results reveal that Ningshou Palace can be divided into six main spatial regions, and a total of 20 spatial elements are identified based on the spatial nodes in each region. The topological relationship among these elements provides insights into the spatial configuration of Ningshou Palace. The analysis identifies the Yangxingmen area as having the highest spatial potential, followed by Huangji Temple and Yangxing Temple areas. The three regions with the highest overall selectivity, integrity, and depth (Yangxingmen, Huangjijeon, and Yangxingjeon) form the core of Ningshou Palace, presenting the greatest potential for tourism utilization. Moreover, the top five regions (Yangxingmen, Huangjijeon, Yangxingjeon, Yangxingtang, and Yihexuan) are interconnected, forming a prominent tourist axis within Ningshou Palace. Future tourism planning can focus on this core axis to enhance the visitor experience, improve efficiency, and showcase the tourism resources of Ningshou Palace. (Conclusions) In conclusion, the preservation and utilization of cultural heritage are of utmost importance for the development of the modern tourism industry. This study emphasizes the potential of traditional architecture in this regard and underscores the significance of comprehensive spatial analysis, especially in the context of spatial planning and design. Furthermore, it highlights the need to incorporate artistic, cultural, and educational values in the preservation and modern utilization of traditional architecture. These findings provide valuable guidance for policymakers, planners, and designers in formulating strategies for the sustainable development of cultural heritage sites.
