Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Due to global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, the frequent occurrence of extreme weather has made environmental problems an important global concern. Eco-city, as a theory to solve urban environmental problems to achieve the symbiosis of the human and natural environment, is gaining attention. However, the existing research has several shortcomings. For example, there is no clear definition of an eco-city. There is no unified planning element index standard on how to assess or design an eco-city. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to clarify the conceptual definition of eco-city through theoretical sorting, propose eco-city planning element indicators, summarize the characteristics of an eco-city, establish an analytical model of an eco-city, conduct further demonstration research on representative green city cases in the Middle East from the perspective of eco-city, and put forward proposals for eco-city project development of wide significance. (Method) This study adopts the methods of literature research and comparative case analysis. By analyzing relevant research literature, a case study model was developed, followed by the results of the analysis of four green city case studies of Msheireb Downtown, Masdar City, Neom The Line, and Neom Oxagon. (Results) The following analyses are derived from this study. First, Neom The Line and Neom Oxagon meet the requirements of the Eco-city Planning Element Indicator Table, and both can be considered eco-cities. Second, the four cases have more prominent systemic and cyclic characteristics. (Conclusions) This study draws the following conclusions. Firstly, the conceptual definition of eco-city is clarified. Second, the analysis table of eco-city planning element indicators is reconstructed. Third, the four characteristics of eco-city – systemic, symbiotic, cyclic, and harmonious – are summarized. Fourth, a comparative analysis concludes that green cities in the Middle East have more prominent systemic and cyclic characteristics. This study provides three suggestions for the construction of eco-cities. First, the construction of an ecological city should focus on reducing the city’s carbon emissions and the sustainable development of various aspects of the city. Second, ecological cities have no set standards. In terms of urban planning design, it is necessary to consider different geographical locations, environments, and climates, and find solutions that are suitable for the local environment. Third, eco-cities should be built to develop the city’s green economy.
