Abstract

(Background and Purpose) In contemporary cities, corporations are increasingly positioned not only as economic entities but also as key agents in the production of space, fulfilling social responsibilities and realizing publicness within the urban fabric. Corporate headquarters, mixed-use cultural spaces, and brand exhibition venues are evolving from closed, work-oriented structures into partially open places accessible to citizens, thereby emerging as new forms of urban public space. However, it remains unclear whether these spaces truly realize publicness or merely serve as symbolic tools for strategic purposes such as brand image enhancement. This study aims to analyze how publicness is formed and realized within corporate spaces, using Henri Lefebvre's concept of 'Representational Space' as the theoretical framework, and to present spatial typologies based on the findings. (Method) First, the study examined the concept of corporate space in the context of its evolution from a function-intensive space focused on business operations to a diversified space that expresses and communicates corporate philosophy. Then, Lefebvre’s triadic spatial dialectic was reviewed, with particular emphasis on how the notion of “Representational Space” provides a theoretical basis for interpreting corporate space as a place where meaning is generated through user experience, interpretation, and social practice. Based on this perspective, three analytical elements were derived to examine publicness within corporate space: symbolism (corporate philosophy and messaging), user experience (sensory and emotional engagement and interpretability), and social practice (voluntary participation and relationship formation). Specific evaluation indicators were developed for each element. Using this framework, the study conducted a qualitative analysis of six domestic and international corporate spaces that include areas open to the public: Amorepacific Headquarters, LG Arts Center Seoul, Naver Green Factory, Apple Park Visitor Center, Ford Foundation Atrium, and Salesforce Park. (Results) The analysis revealed that publicness in corporate spaces manifests in diverse ways depending more on the interpretability, sensory experience, and structure of civic engagement than on physical openness alone. Spaces emphasizing sensory experience and autonomous stay demonstrated user-centered publicness, while spaces organized around participatory programs fostered publicness through social practice. In contrast, spaces focused on visual symbolism and brand messaging achieved a certain level of symbolic publicness but lacked substantial support for social engagement. (Conclusions) Based on these findings, this study presents three types of publicness realization in corporate spaces: ① Symbolism-led type, ② Cultural platform type, and ③ Experiential expansion type. Lefebvre's concept of 'Representational Space' proved to be a valuable theoretical tool for understanding corporate spaces as holistic environments where meaning-making, user interpretation, and social practice intersect. The study emphasizes the need for strategic, typology-based approaches to future corporate space planning and management that integrate identity, user experience, and the realization of social value.
