Abstract

(Background and Purpose) After the pandemic, people have become more aware of their own inner values, recognizing emotions as a fundamental dimension of human nature. This has led to a rising interest in emotional well-being and wellness, with trauma healing emerging as a significant trend. Consumers who are wellness-conscious engage in self-healing and recovery practices, emphasizing the need for wellness hotels to incorporate trauma healing into their spaces. This study reflects these trends by examining the characteristics of trauma healing in wellness hotel spaces and aims to generate design insights for future spatial design and research applications. (Method) This study analyzes five case studies of medium-sized overseas wellness hotels, established after 2000, that distinctly reflect trauma healing characteristics and accommodate over 200 guests. The research methodology involves a literature review to define the concept and characteristics of wellness hotels and trauma healing spaces. Based on previous studies, an analytical framework for trauma healing space characteristics is developed. Using this framework, the study examines the trauma healing aspects of wellness hotel spaces and derives final conclusions. (Results) The analysis of trauma healing spaces in wellness hotels revealed distinct characteristics across different spatial types. Healing and rest spaces demonstrated exceptional restorative properties but exhibited low sociability. Activity and health promotion spaces showed high experiential qualities and provided diverse healing programs, yet their sociability remained relatively low. Mindful life zones recorded the highest scores in both experiential and social aspects, functioning as open and collaborative healing environments. However, these spaces showed low refuge-like qualities, lacking spatial elements that provide a sense of protection and security. Overall, the trauma healing effectiveness varied significantly according to the spatial typology of wellness hotels. (Conclusions) This study examined trauma healing spaces in overseas wellness hotels to identify the characteristics of healing environments. Wellness hotels comprise healing and rest spaces, activity and health promotion spaces, and mindful life zones, each supporting physical and mental healing as well as social adaptation. Healing and rest spaces showed the highest restorative properties (3.7 points) and provided customized healing facilities with resident medical staff, but received low scores for sociability (2.2 points). Activity and health promotion spaces demonstrated high experiential qualities (3.7 points) but recorded the lowest sociability scores (2.1 points). Mindful life zones achieved high scores in both experiential and social aspects (4.6 points), functioning as open healing spaces, though their refuge-like qualities (3.3 points) were relatively low. This study highlights the trauma healing concepts and spatial characteristics of wellness hotels in the post-pandemic changing environment, suggesting the need for more in-depth research including domestic cases.
