Abstract

This study explores root cause of anti-Asian crime during COVID-19 pandemic as by using the power-unbalanced structure perspective. Ironically, Asian Americans have been imaged through a ambivalent stereotype that can be changed from 'Yellow Peril' to 'Model Minority'. This unique image has been constructed by power of control - especially White Supremacy - in the economic and political context. While yellow peril image treats Asian people as dangerous, inferior foreigners, model minority myth - that emphasizes the message, "hard work equals success" - can conceal racial capitalism and inequality in the United States by exaggerating social mobility that equally offers opportunity for success if anyone works hard. It can control other minority groups by making Asian Americans as a model minority. Because of that, Asian Americans have historically been considered as perpetually 'others' no matter how long they have lived together in the United States. It has been easy for people to have antagonism against Asian Americans as realistic or symbolic threat. The COVID-19 pandemic in the United States has increased the risks of Asian Americans to hate crimes in connection to infectious diseases.
