Abstract

This study considers a teaching scheme for Korean grammar based on the concept of function by addressing how elements of grammar are utilized during real language use. Language learners often fail to properly utilize grammar taught in the classroom in practical situations since dictionary definitions are unable to cover all possible usage. To tackle this problem, methods and textbooks used in the teaching of language often involve the concept of function. However, in Korean language textbooks, items labeled as functions were found to include the three concepts of grammar content, task and function mixed together. Since in the teaching of grammar the learner should be considered the subject who will put language to use, function is here defined as the intention of an utterance as directed toward the listener when the utterance is made by the speaker. Understanding the functions of different elements of grammar in discourse context allows a more effective teaching model to be developed. (Dankook University)
