Abstract
Kim, Hae-Dong. 2004. The comparison of learners' needs for the development of foreign language textbooks. Teaching Koreans as a Foreign Language, 29, 1~38. The aim of this paper is to compare the needs of KFL and EFL learners in relating to the development of textbooks. The data of 446 KFL learners from Kang's (2003) study is compared with the data of 2,097 university-level EFL learners. The results of the comparison reveal that the KFL learners showed a strong integrative motivation whereas EFL learners did a strong instrumental motivation. KFL learners preferred the role plays, but EFL learners did pair work and group discussion. Similarities were found in their preferred language skill to study. The topics related to their personal life, such as ‘sports/hobbies/ entertainment' and 'food/dining out' were considered to be very interesting in their foreign language study. Based on the findings, it is suggested that foreign language textbooks should reflect the particular target learners' preferred types of activities and include their favorite topics.
