Abstract

The ongoing 4th Industrial Revolution has been reforming the traditional society, and one of the most conspicuous features of the 4IR society is the erosion of the fiction-real boundary. This new social reality leads to posing a challenge to the textual representation of social reality. In the previous years, the real and fictional worlds were conceived as exclusively independent domains. As the 4th Industrial Revolution has made an inroad into our society utilizing revolutionary scientific technologies of telepresence such as AR, AI, VR, IoT, however, the real-fictional boundaries are getting faded, interchanged, and crisscrossed. Even fictional-textual reality often substitutes social reality. Literature as an art form used to enjoy the privilege of the erosion of the real-fictional boundary. Still, the existence of the disruption between the real and fictional in the 4IR society fundamentally questions the literary representation of reality. The science fiction novel is a compelling case in point. On the one hand, it fits a literary genre to the 4th IR society because it traditionally has encompassed revolutionary scientific technologies as a literary representation of reality. On the other hand, in its literary representation of sci-technologies, it still crosses boundaries between scientific reality and unscientific ones. In some cases, out of their personal beliefs rather than objective scientific shreds of evidence, the novelists take a firm position of the opposite side to the scientifically consented area on critical but controversial issues. The mixture of the scientific reality and the unreal in science fiction novel becomes a severe problem when it deals with vital but complicated matters such as climate change, because it may mislead the general public. The greatest challenge of the climate change approach lies in communication with the people rather than lack of understanding of its cause and effects. And, of all literary genres, science fiction novel is the most popular one and can exercise a significant influence on ideas and decisions of the general public on issues like climate change. Michael Crichton’s 2004 climate fiction novel The State of Fear is a good case in point.
