한국의 문화 소비에 관한 연구들은 상류층은 고급문화를 선호하고 하류층은 저급문화를 선호한다는 부르디외의 문화 자본 이론이 한국 사회에 적용될 수 있는가에 주로 초점을 맞추어왔다. 2007년 KGSS 조사를 근거로 이 논문은 계량적 방법을 이용하여 우리 사회의 문화적 재생산 문제를 보다 명료하게 설명해 보고자 했다. 특히 학교 밖에서 이루어지는 문화예술 교육의 경험이 현재의 문화 소비에 어떤 영향을 주고 있는가를 살펴봄으로써 부모의 상승지향적 실천의 일환으로서의 문화적 투자의 의미를 밝혀 보고자 했다. 서구와 달리 한국에서는 정규 교과 과정 이외의 사적인 문화예술 교육이 광범위하게 확산되어 있고 이 경험의 질과 양을 좌우하는 것이 상당 부분 부모의 경제 자본, 문화 자본이기 때문에 문화적 재생산을 설명하는 데 있어서 문화예술 교육 경험이 결정적인 역할을 할 것이라고 예상할 수 있다. 분석 결과 문화 교육의 경험은 연령과 사회 불평등의 변수들에 의해 일관되게 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 문화 교육의 경험은 현재의 문화 소비 활동에 통계적으로 유의미하게 영향을 미쳤다. 이와 같은 결과는 문화예술 교육의 확대를 위한 정부의 정책적 노력이 가지는 중요성을 뒷받침한다.
Abstract
Numerous studies on cultural consumption in South Korea have focused mainly on the applicability of Bourdieu's theory without investigating the role of cultural education in cultural reproduction of social inequality. Using data from the culture modules of the 2007 General Social Survey, this paper analyzes the distributions of extra-school cultural or artistic education experiences and their relation with cultural consumption. Data analysis shows that cultural education is highly related with age and social inequality. In addition, adolescent experiences of cultural education increase the current cultural consumption of individuals. The findings stress the role of cultural education as a mediator in the cultural reproduction of social inequality and underline the need to further expand cultural education opportunities for children of low socio-cultural levels.
