Abstract

In this study, poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMG) was used as a polyether-based polyol, while toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) served as the aromatic and aliphatic isocyanates, respectively. Additionally, various diols, including ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, and propoxylated isosorbide (PI5), were used to synthesize a range of waterborne polyurethanes (PUDs). The study primarily focused on analyzing the impact of bio-based isosorbide diol compared to petroleum-based diols on the properties of PUD. The PUDs were synthesized using the prepolymer method under catalytic conditions, and FT-IR analysis confirmed successful synthesis by identifying the chemical structure and functional groups of the PUD resin. TGA, DSC, and DMA analyses were conducted to observe the thermal behavior, and results indicated that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of bio-based isosorbide PUD was slightly lower than that of petroleum-based PUD. The stress-strain curves showed that while the initial modulus of bio-based isosorbide PUD increased, the tensile strength and elongation decreased compared to petroleum-based PUD. Additionally, there was minimal difference in the film’s transmittance between bio-based isosorbide and petroleum-based PUDs. For TDI-based PUDs (TPUD), a UV test was performed to evaluate yellowing characteristics under UV exposure, and the results were represented using a grayscale. Particle size analysis revealed a tendency for increased particle size and distribution in PUDs containing isosorbide, a diol with relatively high molecular weight. Furthermore, hydrolysis resistance tests on all PUD films showed significant reductions in tensile strength and elongation.
