Abstract

This article is focussed on the ideology of Diamond Sutra in the poems of Shin Ji-Hye who is working as a poet in New York now. The ideology of Diamond Sutra explains about ‘Samcheondecheonsegye’ of infinite place, which means the universe is all life. This confronts human ignorance and arrogance to break the ego-centric ideologies and to make us to recognize all nature as it is. In this sense, we could know that the ideology of Diamond Sutra opens the way to think ecologically because it breaks the fixed idea and obsession with lineament, showing that the ecological problems will not be solved without a mindset shift about nature. Shin Ji-Hye demonstrates her vast and free world of poems where we could cross all the frontiers as we can imagine. In the bottom of the communication in her imagination where there is no boundary between time and place, or between living things and lifeless matter, the ideology of ‘Diamond Sutra’ exists. In the scripture, it is talking about infinite space, infinite life, equality, and relationship. This can be understood as a core idea that enables the ecological vision of Diamond Sutra. The poet realizes infinite space and life by realizing the idea of Diamond Sutra. A mysterious idea that all life has no fixed reality and that the phenomenon of life itself has absoluteness and autonomy is revealed in her poetry. In her poems, we can confirm the ideology of Diamond Sutra that says all lives don’t have fixed substance and a life itself has absoluteness and autonomy. The poet, living in New York where we consider material civilization’s edge or the gallery of the human race, tries to transcend her identity as stranger. This conquest of otherness doesn’t set limits to herself but tries to go beyond all stereotypes. She thinks that all beings are equal in life beyond nationality, race or human being. In her poetic thought there can’t exist discernment nor discrimination. All beings are connected and open, so that they share their lives. What the poet realizes, is a spirit of ‘horizontality and modesty’. It doesn’t seem to exist the only solution for our ecological problem that we are facing. As there are various perspectives to see the cause of the ecological problem, they try to seek the way to solve it in a diverse aspects. It seems that the ideology of Diamond Sutra which denies all distinction and discrimination, provides the possibility of the ecological interpretation. The Diamond Sutra, which denies all distinction and discrimination, is valuable as an idea that can overcome anthropocentrism. Therefore, the Shin Ji-hye‘s poems , which allows the readers to participate in the process of her thinking by dissolving the core ideas of in her works, contains ecological literary values.
