초록
Black feminism broadened the discourse of gender and race in American literature. Black feminist movements emerged in the 1960s and 1970s to advocate for the experience of black women, which were excluded from the civil rights and feminist movements. It resists the discrimination against race, gender, and class. Gumbs’ Undrowned provides a unique perspective through black feminism by exploring the similar experience of the oppression between sea mammals and the black community. Identification in Undrowned further raises questions about defining humans and forming a compatible relationship between humans and the environment. This paper analyzes Gumbs’ Undrowned, which revision the lives of people oppressed by colonialism, white supremacy, and capitalism. I explore the context of black feminism. Moreover, to reimagine oppression through undrowning, I analyze the themes of Undrowned in three parts. I first analyze the theme of identification and breath. Second, I analyze the theme of vulnerability and collaboration. Third, I analyze the theme of adaptation and love. In conclusion, I interpret the meaning of undrowning in terms of black feminism.
