Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the diversity of cultural consumption in Korea. To analyze the diversity, we introduce the two new dimensions, 'hybridity' and 'equality': given different types of cultural activities consumed by a person, the hybridity measures the degree of their heterogeneity across different cultural boundaries and the equality measures the degree of uniformness in terms of how often the person consumes each activity. With the two metrics, along with the two other traditional metrics, ‘total number of type' and ‘total frequency' of the consumed cultural activities, we analyzed 2016 The Survey of Cultural Enjoyment. The analysis shows that total frequency is not positively correlated with hybridity and equality but that the total number of type has strong correlation with them. A further regression analysis shows that, in order to improve both the hybridity and the equality, the size of a resident city should not be too small. Finally, ANOVA analysis shows that old age, married households, low cultural capital and economical capital are found to hurt the hybridity and the equality--this is the case even for those subjects who have high total number of type and the high total frequency. A major contribution in this study is that we bring a new perspective in analyzing the diversity of the cultural consumption by introducing the two factors, hybridity and equality. We also provide a theoretical and practical implication for enhancing the diversity of cultural consumption in Korea.
