Abstract

The Devil Madangshoe performed on the November in 1963 occupies the very important position in the Korean Madang Drama. Its script which had not been revealed up to now, opened to the public recently and its value can be appreciated properly. The Devil Madangshoe tried to grasp the reason of poverty of rural community in the early 1960s and suggest the ways to overcome it. It attributed the reason of poverty to the public officials' corruption and suggested that university students and peasants should fight together to get rid of this structural contradiction. In the Devil Madangshoe, the place of performance and the place of drama coincided with each other, so that the reality of drama was emphasized. Moreover it designed the community between the stage of drama and the audience-seats. As a result of it the audience were not only spectators who simply watched the play, but also they played actors' role who intervened in the play and expressed their opinions. The Devil Madangshoe got good results in modernizing the techniques of Korean Mask Drama and taking advantage of them and made sure the possibility of new drama which matched well with the techniques of Western Drama. The modernization of tradition began to appear in the Korean theater world of 1960s, but the result was insignificant, since in most cases, they couldn't understand the theory of performance in Korean Mask Drama. Unlike these plays, the Devil Madangshoe utilized well both the characteristics of Western Drama and those of Korean Mask Drama, so it could ensure the birth of new drama. The dramatical experiments tried in the Devil Madangshoe succeeded to the future generation and played an important role in the birth of Madang Drama.
