Abstract

This study examines how relative comparisons of obesity and income with peers affect subjective obesity assessment, weight loss attempts, and suicide risks by using 2005 national health and nutrition survey data. Estimation results show that regardless of absolute BMI and waist circumference, those who have fatness relative to their peers are more likely perceive to be obese and want to reduce weight. Those individuals are likely to have higher suicide risks also. It appears that those who have less income relative to their peers are more likely to plan suicide attempts. These results imply that relative comparison with peers can induce imitative obesity and increase suicide risks.
