Abstract
The rising elderly population and increase in chronic diseases are expected to result in a continued increase in the prevalence of multimorbidity. Patients with multimorbidity have a characteristic of increased healthcare utilization due to the higher number of conditions requiring management. We used data from the 2017 and 2018 Korean Health Panel(KHP) Survey. The aim of this study is to examine the current status of middle-aged and older adults with multimorbidity and analyze the relationship between their usual source of care (USC) and emergency department (ED) visits. The main findings of this study are as follows. Firstly, 71.9% of middle-aged and older adults with multimorbidity were 65 years or older, with an average of 2.8 chronic conditions. The most common multimorbidity patterns were 'hypertension-arthritis' and 'arthritis-intervertebral disc disorder/spinal disease'. Secondly, Multiple logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between ED visits and having USC with a regular doctor. (OR (95% CI): 0.73 (0.56-0.96)) These results not only identify the types of multimorbidity patients and reflect their characteristics but also suggest the need to consider USC as a means to improve the efficiency of ED use among patients with multimorbidity.
