Abstract
Enhancing and sustaining a spectrum of health behaviors in conjunction with pharmacological intervention for chronic disease is imperative to optimize the efficacy of chronic disease management. Nevertheless, the medication itself may have the opposite effect, potentially undermining the motivation of patients to enhance and maintain their health behaviors. This study analyzed data from the Korea Health Panel Study to ascertain whether patients newly diagnosed with hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia altered their health behaviors, including physical activity, exercise, alcohol consumption, and smoking, following the initiation of drug treatment. The panel fixed-effect model estimates indicated that drug treatment was associated with a reduction in physical activity and the probability of engaging in vigorous to moderate exercise among individuals diagnosed with hypertension. However, a reduction in health-risk behaviors, such as smoking and alcohol consumption, was also observed for all three conditions, indicating that the substitution and complement effects of medication on health behaviors may vary across conditions and health behaviors. Further analysis revealed that the reduction in physical activity following medication was significant in the hypertension population, where self-assessed health status improved or remained unchanged after medication. These findings underscore the necessity for tailored policy approaches to enhance and sustain health behaviors after drug treatment for chronic disease management.
