Abstract

This study investigates the impact of changes in the employment status of married women on their depressive symptoms, and how this relationship is influenced by family support characteristics. Using data from the 4th to 8th waves of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families, the analysis was conducted using a fixed effects model in panel regression. The findings are as follows: First, controlling for sociodemographic characteristics and family support factors, changes in individual employment status did not influence changes in depressive symptoms. Second, an increase in marital happiness led to decreased depression levels, whereas dissatisfaction with spousal contribution to household chores and a perceived lack of fairness in sharing chores among dual-earning couples were associated with increased depression. Third, the moderating effect of marital happiness was confirmed; even when transitioning from employment to non-employment, an increase in marital happiness led to decreased depression. Particularly, in models considering the moderating effects of family support and employment status, transitioning from employment to non-employment resulted in increased depression. These results suggest that practical and policy approaches should consider not only the influence of employment status but also the role of family support characteristics in reducing depression among married women.
