Abstract
This study primarily focused on analyzing the predictive factors of parenting stress in parents raising their firstborn infants, with a comparative analysis between mothers and fathers, explicitly applying Explainable AI (XAI) for comprehensive insights. This study addresses the limitations of previous research that primarily focused on mothers or depended on linear statistical methods by employing ensemble techniques such as Random Forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, and CatBoost to calculate variable importance. CatBoost was selected as the optimal model. Subsequently, a SHAP-based dependence analysis was conducted. The analysis revealed that maternal stress was shaped by a combination of emotional and behavioral factors, including parenting behavior, self-esteem, depression, and smartphone overreliance, as well as socioeconomic and child characteristics. Paternal stress was significantly influenced by internal characteristics, such as self-esteem, marital conflict, and depression, along with parenting behavior and smartphone overreliance. Maternal factors also had a spillover effect on paternal stress. Based on these findings, we suggest strengthening support for mothers and implementing policies that foster fathers’ recognition as independent parenting agents (e.g., expanding paternity leave and providing tailored information).
