Abstract
This study examined the impact of discrimination experiences on depression among young adult carers in households with disabled family members, focusing on the mediating role of family strength. Using merged data from the first to fifth waves of the Panel Survey of Life of Persons with Disabilities, 1,848 carers aged 20 to 39 were analyzed through complex sample structural equation modeling. The results indicated that discrimination had a significant positive effect on depression, whereas family strength showed a significant negative effect. Discrimination also reduced family strength, which partially mediated this relationship. These findings highlight the critical role of family strength in alleviating depressive symptoms and point to the need for interventions that strengthen emotional support and relational well-being among young carers and their families. Given the dual impact of discrimination on both family dynamics and mental health, comprehensive policy support for young adult carers in disabled households is warranted.
