Abstract

Parmenion was the general that Alexandros the Great had trusted to the crucial moment 󰠏 the victory of Gaugamela 󰠏 in the expedition of Alexandros and supported as a vice commandant of Macedonian army, even though there were Alexandros’ check ups to him. And he was purged by Alexandros, because he was a man of influence in the army. His role in the expedition was searched in some decisive battles. At those times, Alexandros would use the tactics of ‘hammer and anvil’. In that tactics, Alexandros himself stood at right front line and charged to the center of enemy's lines. In his charging time, the reft lines of the army had to stand the enemy's pressure as an anvil. Alexandros expected him as a supporter from the start of expedition, because Alexandros hadn’t sufficient battle experiences, even though he had the prerogative of supreme command. After the battle of Gaugamela, he concluded that Parmenion’s worth needed no more. All the more, he needed the absolute commandment of his army. That was proved in the eliminations on the Parmenion’s family. After those actions had fulfilled, there was no more man of Parmenion's role. That situation was applied to Hephaistion, Alexandros’ lover. Alexandros didn't want ‘another Parmenion’, after he had convicted the success of expedition. In addition that, Hephaistion hadn’t sufficient experiences or trust of army. In ancient writers, especially, Plutarchos set up Parmenion as a rival of Alexandros in his Parallel Lives. And Plutarchos described Parmenion critically. On contrast to his attitude, Curtius Rufus described Parmenion as a victim of Alexandros’ bitterness. And Arrianos stood in the middle of those two writers and described the cases comparatively objective.
