Abstract

Among the literary works of ancient Mesopotamia, the Epic of Gilgamesh is the one whose formative history is best traced. The earliest known ‘later’ or ‘canonical’ version dates from the 7th century BC, but its prototype dates back to the Old Babylonian period. So how did the Old Babylonian version of the Epic of Gilgamesh come to be written? Even before Sumerian poems of Gilgamesh were known, scholars believed that its origins could be traced back to the Sumerian period. In fact, the publication of Sumerian poems of Gilgamesh in the early 20th century spurred research into the relationship between the Epic of Gilgamesh and Sumerian fragments. However, much of it was poorly understood until the discovery of additional Sumerian tablets in ancient Meturan in the 1980s. Added to this is the progress in our knowledge of the Sumerian language and literature. It is a good time to revisit the topic. This paper aims to examine the place of the Gilgamesh poems in Sumerian culture and to put the latter in comparative perspective with the Gilgamesh epic. The Sumerian fragments of Gilgamesh are mostly attributed to Gobabylonian school documents, but their earliest documentation is likely to date from the Third Dynasty of Ur. This means that the Sumerian fragments reflect the interests of Sumerian society. Although there is no direct evidence of oral tradition, stylistic analysis of the Sumerian fragments has allowed us to understand that they were created and transmitted in interaction with oral tradition, and to explore the various relationships between the Sumerian fragments and later epics. <Bilgamesh Enkidu and the Underworld (BEN) was translated into Akkadian, and its second half was used in the 12th tablet of the Epic of Gilgamesh. At first glance, the relationship between the two may appear to be a mechanical translation, but as we have argued, the author of the epic developed the friendship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu presented in BEN into a central concept that runs throughout the epic. <In the case of Bilgamesh and Huwawa and Bilgamesh and the Sky Bull, the relationship between them and the Epic of Gilgamesh is looser. Although the basic plot of the Sumerian fragments is found on tablets 3, 5, and 6 of the epic, the Sumerian sources differ significantly from the Gilgamesh epic in detail. Most notably, unlike the later epic, which depicts a completely anthropocentric worldview, the Gilgamesh depicted in the Sumerian fragments performs heroic deeds while remaining true to traditional Sumerian religion. <The anecdotes reflected in The Death of Bilgamesh and Bilgamesh and the Aegean are not found in the Epic of Gilgamesh at all. However, there is evidence that the author of the Gilgamesh Epic utilized the Sumerian fragments on a more micro level. The Sumerian fragments about Gilgamesh vary in composition from region to region, suggesting that they contain the "cultural memory" of Sumerian society about Gilgamesh. While the oral origins of Sumerian literature are debated, it is clear that written Sumerian texts were transmitted through oral interaction. It is reasonable to assume that the Gilgamesh Sumerian fragments also had an oral tradition that interacted with them. However, whether a longer-plotted Sumerian version of the Gilgamesh epic that encompasses the Sumerian fragments exists is a matter for separate research.
