Abstract
This study aims to examine The Bell in the light of Simone Weil's ideas such as gravity, retrogression, attention, and the void. Iris Murdoch was a philosopher as well as a novelist. She tried to distinguish truth from fantasy through her work. The Bell, representative of her early novels, seems to be the most successful work to examine how Weil's ideas affected her novels. Simone Weil said that morality is a matter of attention, not of will.She suggested that spiritual progress is won through meditation which is a contrast to contemporary English ethics with its exclusive emphasis on act and choice and its neglect of the inner life.(Knowing the Void) Whereas Weil showed the way to reach God through her meditation, Murdoch showed the way to have a clear perception of external reality which is lacking in the modern age. Murdoch warned people who are convinced that all is onethrough revealing the extremely messy inner life of a modern individual who is endlessly still to be explained. She insisted that we should be free from all kinds of false consolation which enchants people not to see reality.
