Abstract
This paper intends to examine E. L. Doctorow's postmodern view of history, compared to traditional ones. It also aims to find a possible answer to how to represent historical truth. After the rise of the postmodern thoughts, many historians have insisted on the textuality of history and emphasized 'history as a discourse and as a genre' rather than 'history as a science'. This change means a radical challenge to the absolute conviction of traditional history and makes historians think history as 'a linguistic and ideological construct.' Doctorow also shows the idea of history as a linguistic and ideological construct in his interviews, essays and novels. Unlike radical relativists, however, Doctorow and some postmodern historians don't reject the existence of realities outside historical texts. Therefore, Doctorow's attempt to represent truer historical realities is meaningful under the condition that history should restore its realities outside historical texts without one firm historical theory. Although Doctorow thinks that historical realities cannot perfectly be represented in texts, and are only linguistically and ideologically constructed in texts, he endeavors to enlarge theories and interpretations of history itself and to restore the excluded historical facts; he wants to liberate history from the interests of particular groups. In this sense, he trusts the possibility to overcome the assertions such as the end of history and textuality of history that laid aside the responsibility of history, and to help people regain true historicity.
