Abstract
This paper is to examine the parallelism between materiality of metamorphosis and the (re)constructed subject in Angela Carter's The Passion of New Eve. The literary metamorphosis, which unfolds the otherness of difference violating the logic of sameness, highlights the effect of bodily change on human mind. Subjectivity is structured by material conditions and is not reduced to self-sufficient and stable identity as commonly believed. The Passion of New Eve investigates the subject-in-process through the transsexual metamorphosis of Eve/lyn and exposes the phallogocentrism of fictional identity which is based on violent binary oppositions. In Cater's fantastic but demythologising text, Evelyn, a male chauvinist who was afraid of the otherness of woman, becomes a woman named Eve through a series of process: the surgery by a feminist group, the rapes and womanlike experiences on monomaniac Zero' farm, and the performative masquerade with transvestite Tristessa. What Carter emphasizes here is, however, not just the cultural production of femininity, but the nonessentialized and fluctuating subjectivity itself. To reveal the uncertainty and mutability of subject is a way to question, resist, and subvert the tyrannical order of (gender) identity which is established on the basis of exclusion and repression of the other. Reading The Passion of New Eve as a text of metamorphosis leads us to clarify the context where the subject is being (re)constructed constantly by material forces.
