Abstract

This paper examines Toni Morrison's Paradise from the perspective of postcolonialism. Bhabha, in particular, provides useful concepts like hybridity, mimicry, ambiguity, and the third space to help understand the characters' way of life in Paradise. In America, African-Americans experienced oppression under slavery which caused long lasting mental trauma and negatively influenced their current lives. The memory of the violence inflicted on the black people was passed down from generation to generation. Paradise explores the dangers of excessive commemoration as a symptom of enduring trauma. It also debunks the myth of racial purity. The Fathers of the black community insisted on black 'purity' and rejected all others as being contaminated and inferior. They concealed their internal problems and attributed all their problems to the women in the convent, whom they eventually assassinated. In the convent, women from various races and social backgrounds lived together. They shared their past experiences and could heal their trauma. In this way, the women created paradise, which was short-lived. Morrison makes it clear that she doesn't agree with the idea of black purity, which is similar to the concept of white purity held by white colonizers. She also disagrees to the notion of paradise. It is because the real de-colonial way to overcome the effects of colonization is to create a new paradigm in which everyone is respected regardless of race.
