Abstract
Young Sun ChoiHowards End, E.M. Forster's novel of 1910, presents a critique of capitalist socio-economic arrangements, addressing the key issues that revolve around class politics of Edwardian England. The novel, in particular, distinguishes itself in its open recognition of money as the basis of modern society. A narrative of the intertwined fate of the distinctly different social groups, Howards End elucidates the centrality of money in the fabric of modern capitalist society. Throughout the work, the inextricable links between a class's mentality and its economic origin are brought to a foreground. In this context, the novel can be defined as a literary restatement of the fundamental Marxist premise that one's social existence conditions his consciousness. Although the theme is rendered in more or less deterministic terms, the novel brilliantly conjures up the ways in which inequality and the barriers of social hierarchies expose themselves at various levels in pre-war England, illustrating the omnipotent force of money. Arguably, the crux of the novel consists not so much in a plain attack on capitalism as in its stringent inquiry into the power of money in shaping one's individual and interpersonal existence.
